Gorret Nalongo
Gorret was born into a family with siblings, with only 4 still alive now. Her mother passed away before she was ever able to meet her, and her father passed away when she was only 12. She was raised by her stepmother, and was never able to attend school because of the high tuition fees. At only 13 years old, she became independent, she had to provide for herself. She gained employment as a maid to a family as a way to have income. She did this until she was 16 years old. In most of the homes she worked in, the man of the home would beat her and attempt to rape her. Because of this, she would run from home to home until violence threatened her. During this time, when Gorret was 15 years old, her stepmother and family tried to force her into marriage, so she again had to run. They used local radio stations, flyers, and newspapers to find her, and bring her to come home. Therefore, at age 16, she was forced to marry a 35 year old man. She conceived and gave birth to a son in this marriage. When she turned 18 years old, she found the courage to again run from the marriage she was forced into to escape danger with her son.
At the end of her running, she found herself safe in Mpigi. She was able to find work in a small restaurant, and she worked there for 3 years. With the income she had, she was able to rent a small room and mat. She would use a few items of clothing she owned to cover herself and her son at night. She soon found she could not care for her, now 4 year old son, and so with nowhere else to turn, she allowed her mother in law to take her son and raise him. She would send the small amounts of money that she could afford to her son for food and clothes, and would visit him whenever she could.
While she was living in Mpigi and working at the restaurant, she met a man, became pregnant and gave birth to twins. She was in a relationship with this man for 2 years before they separated. After this, she remained alone for 3 years. The twins father would help to provide for them, and eventually took the twins to live with him. She continued to work, and focused on providing for her children, and then she met a man. He was good, and would provide for her. They had 4 children together, and things were getting better. Eventually though, this man left her for another woman which he married. He now, does not help with their children, and does not want to be involved in their lives. The children have tried to visit him, and he just chases them away. For work now, Gorret does laundry for people and will take jobs of physical labor in gardens digging.
While she was pregnant with her youngest son, the pregnancy had gone on for far too long. She had been carrying her son for over 11 months. A woman named Mummy Benita who had seen her, came to visit her. This woman recommended going to see Pastor Brian Lukyamuzi for prayer. In a desperate attempt to give birth, she agreed. Pastor Brian prayed for her that day. He would end up coming to her house to visit her for a full month. Because of the pregnancy, she could not work, so he would bring food, soap, and money for rent to help her get through this time. In the last week of this month, after continuous prayer, she gave birth naturally to a healthy baby boy. This was a true miracle. When Gorret went to the hospital for check ups, the doctors told her she would only be able to give birth if she had a C-section. She wanted Pastor Brian to name her baby boy, he agreed. He named the boy Muwanguzi, meaning “winner.” After giving birth at the hospital, she did not have money to cover the bill, so Pastor Brian paid the bill in full, and she was able to return home. He continued to bring food, soap, and pay her rent. The love of Christ shown to her through Pastor Brian was something she had never experienced. When her son turned one year old, she saw the faithfulness of God, keeping him alive and healthy, as they were provided for. She went to Redeemed Bible Church for the first time, gave her life to Christ, and was baptized. This was the first baptism ever at Redeemed Bible Church. Gorret still washes laundry and does physical labor in the gardens for work. She is not yet where she wants to be, but she sees how much God has already provided and has faith that He will continue to do so.
Gorret’s story is one of traumas, heartbreak, and let downs again and again. She suffered at the hands of a husband she never consented to have at only 15 years old. She sought out safety and provision in men that only hurt her more. But God. God saw her in every season of her life, through every harmful event, and every moment of agony, He saw her. He sent Benita in her path to love and lead her. He sent Pastor Brian, to provide for her, and give her truth and love of Jesus. In one moment, on her sons first birthday, she saw the full picture of what God had been doing all along, and she surrendered to Him fully. Since then, she has continued to attend Redeemed Bible Church, and is serving the Lord in everything she does.
